Able Tasmans - A Cuppa Tea and a Lie Down (re-post)

A major work from this New Zealand indie group, A Cuppa Tea and a Lie Down comes highly recommended to those in love with the sophisticated and delicate arrangements of the New Zealand rock scene's Flying Nun label sound. While some of their peers in the productive period of '80s and '90s down under produced edgy, loud guitar music inside the framework of pop, Able Tasmans temper their largely acoustic sound with keyboards and acoustic arrangements in place of corrosive guitars. The songs are built on the delicate threshold of complexity/simplicity, filled out with lush arrangements and dreamy atmospheres that call to mind Fairport Convention. A great album filled with sweet and crafty pop songs that will hold much appeal to fans of intelligent guitar pop; Yo la Tengo, Belle & Sebastian, the Bats, and Television Personalities spring to mind.

one of my alltime favourites. Although I already own this album (as original CD) it is good to see it shared here. They deserve to be heard.

There won't be any Clean Live 1982, they requested that we do not post that show.

ohhh.. anyway... very great blog!
you discovered me the Tall Dwarfs and the Clean, that changed my conception about acoustic guitars.. my 2 fav bands from at least the last two/three months.
Can you tell me other VERY similar stuff Clean/Tall Dwarfs?
the Clean teached me the way to play acoustic guitar a la punk style! (see: Billy Two, On Again/Off Again... AMAZING HAND MOVE!)

get your head around the Gordons/Bailter Space...

I'm glad to hear that. Acoustic guitars can rock, and in my opinion if done properly can rock just as hard as any electric guitar. The Clean tap into the purest essence of rock, which is why they will always be the greatest.

I think the link leads to The Terminals' Medusa, although the file name is listed as A Cuppa Tea.

Kiwi Tapes said...

That's impossible, the two albums aren't even uploaded to the same service!

Would it be possible to re-upload any of the other Able Tasmans albums on this site? (Shape of Dolls, Hey Spinner, Planet)
