The End is Nigh

When I first started this blog, I always intended to run it for a finite amount of time. The goal was simple: uncover the best of kiwi-rock and put it on display. In the music blogging scene, there seems to be a notion that quantity is better than quality. I don't know about you guys, but there are very few blogs out there where I feel I can trust the taste of the blogger enough to blindly download whatever they post. Too often it's just about posting albums to fill a quota without any regards to consistency.

My hope has always been that you all could come on here and know what you are getting without having to worry or do too much of your own research before downloading an album.

I am at a point now where I feel like ending this blog will be a good thing.... so I am setting a date... the final post on this blog will be on September 30th, 2007.

I feel like we are getting close to uncovering all of the best that New Zealand has to offer. If you think I am wrong, you have a month and a half to prove me wrong... so get cookin' on those submissions! At some point in the next few days I will update the wishlist with new entries.

Following this blog, I will starting a new blog called Decrepit Tapes which will feature exclusively lo-fi and home recorded music. My interest in this type of music was originally what attracted me to the music of New Zealand in the first place. If you like what you find on here, I can assure you that you will love this blog.

Don't you worry, I have plenty of great submissions from you guys in my queue ready to post, so this should be a very fruitful final stretch!

This isn't about throwing in the towel, it's about reaching a logical end to something in order to preserve a level of quality.

This blog will not cease to exist once we reach that end date, all posts made will still remain up and (if DivShare keeps it's promise) all of the downloads should still remain active for a long period of time.

Thanks for posting my stuff on Totally Fuzzy, it's a great resource!

hm. I can relate to this decision from a quality point of view if you feel like this. BUT your blog is one of those that are very special because of the fact that most stuff you post is simply unavailable here in germany. I own some flying nun stuff and loved the "in love with these times" sampler and always returned to listening it only to dive deeper into this kind of new zealand stuff. I saw cakekitchen and bailter space live but i didn't have so much money way back when so i mainly have some of the 3ds and some cakekitchen, bailter space, etc. but i missed out on all those odd releases you posted.

big respect and please do not quit,
bye

Hi there,

Please do update your wishlist. I've got a bit of stuff here that I hope to be able to help you with. Have you got 'Live Dead See' yet?

well, i wish to thank you a thousand times for this wonderful blog. many years ago i read in the old howl-magazine a lot of reviews about new zealand music. i started to search for the records - but - in germany it was not very easy to find them (nevertheless i found a bunch). a lot of bands sounding very interesting in the reviews, i would never have the chance to hear, i suspected. but then - your blog appeared like christmas in spring... once again: many thanks! looking forward to your new blog with lo-fi recordings, another passion of me;-)))

Damn, and I only recently discovered this blog too. This is easily the best music blog I have ever encountered, and I very much appreciate the "quality over quantity" approach. As an ex-pat New Zealander, it's great to hear so much music from home and I've downloaded plenty that I aim to order in the near future.

Now, I'm not the sort who normally asks for re-posts of material - if I've missed the boat, I've missed the boat, and that's that. But maybe after 30/09, you could gradually re-upload those albums whose links are no longer active. Think of it as being akin to how long-since-cancelled TV shows have re-runs. It would certainly satisfy many people, not to mention it might stop or at least reduce the inevitable "OMG REPOST PLZ" comments.

Well, whatever you decide to do, thank you very much for the music that has been posted. It's been excellent.

Sorry, I don't have the time or the patience to re-upload all of the files that have been taken down.

My hope is that the existence of this blog has made all of this music much more widespread. Each file averages a few hundred downloads, so I would suspect that you can find most of this stuff on file sharing networks or even other blogs if you look hard enough. I have found quite a bit of NZ music on Soulseek which is found at www.slsknet.org. I would also encourage you to contact people who comment on this blog and see if they have it.

Sorry again, I hope you understand that it's quite difficult to keep up with what people have and don't have.

Sad to see you go, but at least you'll leave a fine library of great music. Looking forward to your next project!
Cheers!
